Youth Mental Health First Aid® (YMHFA) is a nationally accredited, evidence-based course that equips parents and carers, educators, youth and community service professionals, and community members with the knowledge and confidence to recognise, understand, and respond to mental health challenges in adolescents and young people. It builds confidence, reduces stigma, and promotes early intervention. Participants receive a Certificate of Completion and may become an Accredited Mental Health First Aider (valid for 3 years) – a refresher course is required every 3 years to maintain accreditation.

    Duration: 14-hour course (delivered over 2 days)

    Time: 9:00am – 4:30pm (ACDT)

You’ll learn how to:

  • Identify signs and symptoms of common mental health problems in adolescents and young people

  • Provide an initial response until professional help is available

  • Connect young people with appropriate professional supports

  • Maintain your own wellbeing while supporting others

Topics covered include, but are not limited to:

  • Depression

  • Anxiety 

  • Eating disorders

  • Psychosis

  • Substance Use

  • Suicidal thoughts and behaviours

  • Non-suicidal self-injury

This training is ideal for:

  • Parents/carers

  • Educators 

  • Youth workers and community service professionals

  • Tertiary students in the community services sector

  • Community members, professionals in other industries, or anyone in a role that involves supervising or supporting young people and adolescents

Delivery modes:

  • Standard (14 hours/2 days) (may also be delivered over 3 shorter sessions by arrangement)

  • Refresher (if due) (typically 4 hours in-person or 5 hours online)

All sessions require a minimum number of participants and can be tailored to meet your group’s needs.

Group and concession rates may be available for tertiary students, larger bookings, and community organisations. Early Bird pricing may be available for selected training sessions and is subject to advertised cut-off dates.
